Low Income Housing
Housing Opportunities offers one, two and three bedroom units in Porter and LaPorte County. Units are available to applicants who meet the income guidelines set by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) - see eligibility requirements below.
Low Income Housing Program - This program helps people get off the streets and is the first step in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Through funds received from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, Housing Opportunities also provides permanent, affordable rentals, with 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units in Portage, Valparaiso, and Michigan City, Indiana.
Program Eligibility Requirements :
Applicants must be at or below 60% of the area median income.
For a family of two, the annual household income must be below $30,180.00
Rents and Responsibilities:
Tenant pays for rent and electric.
Housing Opportunities pays for water, sewer, and trash pick-up.

Housing for the Homeless
Housing Opportunities has several housing programs designed to help encourage people who are ready to move from inhabitable conditions. Our housing for the homeless programs provide affordable, safe apartments where individuals and families gain the personal and economic empowerment needed to break the cycle of homelessness.
Temporary Housing Program - This program has 16 units located in Valparaiso.  Individuals/families are able to reside here for 30-120 days. This program gives the individual/family a chance to get off the streets and receive customized support services that address the family needs at that time.  This program is open to current Porter County residents who qualify.  The first step in applying for this program is to call the office for an application and to check the status of the waiting list.  
 Permanent Housing Program -This program has units in Portage and Michigan City.  This provides individuals/families an affordable option while seeking assistance to improve their lives along with the training and skills necessary to succeed in the community. They are offered classes that focus on budgeting and credit repair classes.  These classes are designed to help the families, based on their financial need.  The permanent housing program allows the individuals/families that are a part of this program a chance to have holidays in their own home.  Most importantly kids have a safe and friendly environment to play and entertain friends.  This program is open to current Porter and LaPorte County residents who qualify.   
With all programs, case management is offered.  The case manager will work with them to enable their return to the community as self-reliant citizen. These programs also offer job preparation skills and training, money management training, self-help programs, support groups, individualized support services and treatment programs as deemed necessary.

Most low income apartments have waiting lists. Some of these lists can take years until you can be called for openings. The key is to try to get on as many waiting lists as possible.
